What Is Neuropathy?

Neuropathy is a disease of the nerves themselves. It is most often diabetic, idiopathic (meaning no known cause), or the result of chemotherapy. The nerve becomes damaged and stops working well.

Symptoms include pain, numbness and burning, often at night, along with balance problems. Neuropathy usually affects the feet and ankles, from the knees down, and can also affect the hands and wrists.

Neuropathy or a pinched nerve?

A compressed nerve in the low back that sends pain down the leg is not peripheral neuropathy. That is radiculitis, or sciatica. You can have both at the same time. A nerve conduction study tells us which one you have and where it is. We do that test in our office.
