In a recent TV segment, Dr. Todd Cevene of Rockford Pain Management answered common questions about chronic neck and back pain.

Why does neck and back pain become chronic?

“Common ones are gonna be as we age, arthritic changes take place, muscle weakening takes place, and you become more susceptible to an injury, and small things turn into big things.”

It is not only athletes. Dr. Todd says it happens to regular people as much as athletes, because their bodies are less conditioned.

Bulging disc, herniated disc or stenosis?

  • Bulging disc: the disc extends past its normal size, becomes inflamed and causes chronic pain.
  • Herniated disc: the disc pushes out and starts to press on the spinal cord or pinch a nerve.
  • Spinal stenosis: the openings the spinal cord and nerves pass through become narrow and start to choke the nerve.

What if the pain keeps coming back?

A flare-up during treatment is common and can usually be resolved. If you are under treatment and it keeps going better, worse, better, worse without real progress, that is the time to get a second opinion.
